Woven Satellite images
My interest here is in the relationship between ‘nature’ and ‘constructed or designed nature’, as seen in traditional gardens or floral patterns, specifically ornate Rococo floral motives. This lead to projects using ‘flowers and leaves’ and representations of nature.
In 2004 satellite images of the earth became available on home computers, although photos of the earth, seen from space, have been available since the mid 60’s. Satellite imagery was often classified and acquired via dubious means. Today NASA and Google Earth, offer detailed imagery and we can now visit exotic places and observe natural events, such as fires, ice breaking up, storms and other weather disasters. It is nature mediated via technology. One place held my attention, for its visual beauty and exotic sounding name, until I discovered that Novaya Zemla, had been used by Russia as a Nuclear test sight; no wonder that satellites made many passes over this remote area in Siberia…… Also Google Earth allowed me to follow the Silkroad in the foot steps of Aurel Stein and Sven Hedin over expansive deserts.
